Navigating Within the Wiki Workspace (JY)
The most pertinent question is, "How do I find anything?" (JZ)
Three simple ways: (K0)
- 1. By navigating logically through hyperlinking (K1)
- If you know the structure of how your wiki space is organized, this will be your best way to find anything. (K2)
- For example you are looking for a remark by someone at an earlier meeting, say, some time in Dec. 2003, and you know that the meeting notes are kept under the MeetingsCalls set of pages. You may navigate and click on the hyperlink of: (K3)
MeetingsCalls
and within that page, look for the link(s) for notes from meetings in Dec. 2003
then click on the one that is right; or click on each one that may contain what you are looking for, and look them over
you may find that what you are looking for is on the page:
MeetingsCalls_2003_12_25 (K4)
- 2. By using Search (K5)
- there is a Search box at the bottom of every wiki page. This provides "full text search" capability on the content of the wiki. (K7)
- just type in the "search string" (e.g. "meeting", "project", ".ppt", ...etc., this could be a word, a phrase, or even a portion of a word), and then hit <return> (K8)
- any wiki page that contain your "search string" will show up. Then click on the link to the page you want. (K9)
- if you click on the Search box, and just hit <return> without typing inything (just leaving it blank), all the pages within the wiki will show up in alphabetical order (very much like a site map). (KA)
- 3. By looking up RecentChanges (K6)
- if you know that the thing you are looking for has recently been worked on; or if you just wanted to explore on what has been added or modified ltaely, then RecentChanges is your best friend. (KB)
- one can find the RecentChanges link near the top and the bottom of every wiki page. Just click on that RecentChanges hyperlink. (KC)
- all changes (or additions) made recently will show up (unless they are marked as "minor edit(s)"). (KD)
- look that over to find what you want, and then click on the typerlink to the page you want to view. (KE)
- you may select how far back (30 days, 60 days, 90 days, ... etc.) you want to cover. Links for that selection can be found near the top of the RecentChanges page. (KF)
- Best advice: just play around and get yourself familiar. A wiki is a participatory workspace. You can only learn so much by reading about it. So, stop reading now, and start playing with it! (KG)
